Massage Therapy – What is It?

Massage therapy is the application of soft tissue manipulation to the body. Massage techniques can be used by hand, fingertips, elbows, hips, forearms, heels, or even a mechanical device. The primary purpose of massage therapy is usually for the relief of body pain or stress. Although massage can be done without gloves, most massages require the use of some sort of glove to apply the pressure. Some massages, such as Swedish massage, also require the use of a lubricant to reduce the friction between the patient’s skin and the therapist’s hands. Massage therapists learn the various areas of massage therapy and practice different techniques according to the type of clientele they work with.

Many people suffering from chronic pain, stress, and other ailments find massage therapy beneficial. Massage therapy can be very effective in relieving pain and relaxing the body. Therapeutic massage can also help people who have illnesses and diseases that cause fatigue and stress. Many patients who experience chronic pain also report improvements in their ability to get up in the morning. Massage therapy can also help people who are recovering from an injury or other medical problem. Many athletes use massage therapy to reduce and prevent further injury and pain.

One important thing to know about massage therapy is that it may not be recommended for all patients with following conditions: fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Raynaud’s Phenomenon, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and diabetic neuropathy. Although there is no medical research supporting this, many massage therapists believe that it helps patients with these and other conditions by allowing the release of endorphins, which are natural pain killers, into the bloodstream. Endorphins are the natural body chemicals that act as a natural and anti-inflammatory drug. The release of endorphins causes the muscles to relax and the patient feels a feeling of euphoria. However, doctors and therapists believe that this effect of massage therapy is short term and does not necessarily lead to a cure of the patient’s illness or condition.

Massage therapy is often done for both medicinal and non-medicinal purposes. It is commonly used as a way of relief for lower back pain or soreness. The massage therapist uses their hands or soft tissues to apply gentle pressure to specific points in the back, buttocks, or shoulders. These soft tissues are designed to provide a gentle push, pull, or shock to the muscles. Pressure is applied in different patterns to provide a variety of effects. The pressure applied is usually not overbearing, but the movement of the muscles is enough to cause some discomfort.

Massage therapists can also provide therapeutic massage treatment for injured, stiff, and elderly patients. It is done with the assistance of a physical therapist. The physical therapist would use their hands, kneading, tapping, and squeezing soft tissue areas to help patients achieve pain relief or mobility improvement. This type of therapy is also frequently used by sports medicine professionals to treat sprains and strains.

There is no evidence, however, that massage therapy is effective in the treatment of serious medical conditions such as cancer. In fact, it can cause more harm than good as it can induce heat, pain, and swelling. This can be harmful to cancer patients, whose immune systems are very weak at the time of the therapy. This kind of therapy may also cause numbness, discomfort, and a loss of sexual function. As previously mentioned, this effect of massage can be short-lived, so it is important to consult your doctor before beginning a massage therapy regimen.
